Garden Focus

How to create a white fountain in a rose garden in oil. Recorded demo from a live session. (Some watercolor notes in narration, also see "Assignment' tab below).

1hr 15min

Follow along as I paint a fountain I saw in Spain. Review the prior Garden Greens lessons, especially #4 lesson of Garden Greens Design Zoom if you are a beginner or new to the program.

---

Any media may be used to follow along as the demo will include a drawing/toning step and then direct painting. The demo will be in oil. See reference photo of 2 fountains... one done in oil and one done in watercolor. You may spend more time on the drawing and toning stage if you like. I usually spend a few minutes on a crude massed drawing. In this demo part of the fountain gets 'drawn in' with the later oil brush marks.

Demo materials used: 9x12 vertical panel (Centurion linen all media primed). Grey glass palette. Oil colors: White (Titanium), Cad Yellow Light, Cad Yellow, Azo Coral (or Cad Red Light), Thio Violet (or Permanent Alizarin Crimson), Transparent Red Oxide (or Burnt Sienna), Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue. Thinner for drawing and toning (I use water-mixable to start so my thinner is water, traditional oil painters may use solvent if you wish). After the brief drawing and toning step I switch to direct painting with no medium or thinner used. Brushes: Rosemary Ivory flats: 2,4,6,8.

Students may wish to review the supply list (see top tab) or view the Library's "Fundamentals" collection of videos for more instruction on oil basics.
