plein air steps for painting azalea blooms in oil

58min

This is an example of how to create a plein air painting. You can skim this if you want to know the basic gist, or for new painters to hear the thoughts I have and see each brush mark. Like most plein air experiences there were some glitches including the camera arm failing at one point! Ugh, the drama! See the Assignment tab for how to make this experience outdoors work for you.

Pick something white to paint outside and set it up against a darker background. The point is not have an amazing painting but to SEE. Really look!

1) plan mass shapes

2) build layers

3) don't assume white is white... look how much gray I use!

4) use variety of everything... mass, shapes, line, color etc

5) above all else make sure your light/dark masses are maintained. If they break apart to much you will get a gray washed out painting.
