Use the video or still shots to make a painting. Design, compose or find the 'main idea' to clarify intent before painting.
I like video for reference for several reasons.
1) The less 'crispy' quality of video allows for better art groupings and detail simplification.
2) I can 'move' around an object to appreciate the 3-D quality and perhaps splice elements together that are not present in a still frame.
3) video shows motion - video 'feels' more realistic
Take a screenshot or pause the video where you like. I like to work from multiple references, so I've grouped the reference for skimming and jumping around. This is my favorite way to work and I use 20-30 photos and art/sketches to begin a painting. As the art progresses, I have 2-4 primary images, but I often 'shop' for additional photos as I go as well. This is my process, see what works for you!
I realized in creating this video that I've done a LOT of western scenes.... and I saw so many more I want to create. The west is so inspiring, have fun!
