Virtual American West

Notan study (black/white) and oil demo (8x10") of a canyon and red rock. Attention to design and sun/shadow relationships. A look at master artwork (Len Chmeil). Critique.

2hr

Class will review the Red Rock Lesson and critique selected student paintings. Painting demo was live on zoom (see download tab for photo reference) and hi-res version is spliced in with reference. This demo will visually answer students' issues that came up from working on the prior assignments in class.

Demo is in oil and looks at how to redesign a photo with shadows that are too dark. Shadow shapes are altered to have more atmospheric conditions to enhance depth (and a sense of distance). The design is simplified. Take a photo you have and simplify the subject as to intent. Then create interesting shapes using only black and white. Have shape variety and aim for only 5-7 big shapes. The fewer 'big shapes' the better. This is harder to do than one might think. Create several designs and select one to make a painting of. A black and white only study is called a "Notan".
