When in doubt simplify! You can feel free to leave out the later details and stop at any point you like. I keep progressing to higher detail. The last shot shows a painting I worked on in the studio for a long time. Many layers on this 18x24" studio oil.
Spend the time to know and enjoy your subject well. Painting out and restating areas will happen and this is to be encouraged as part of the lesson. Reassess as you go, you will need to adjust. I do this often. Above all else you must constantly review and check: 1) VALUE (shades of gray, 80% of the art is mid-tone) and 2) CHROMA (color saturation, use less as you go back) 3) COLOR as to warm/cool and yellow getting 'lost' in the distance. I narrate this through the video and even show some b/w shots so students can see the value/color relationships.
