Material used: 6x8 gessobord panel, #4 and #6 Ivory Long Flat Rosemary brushes. Oil paint in semi-limited palette (white, cobalt blue, thio violet, ado coral, trans. oxide red, cad. yellow). No medium, no cleaning of brushed except wiping out. I use a lot of paint and this minimizes any murky color that might result from not using a light, medium and dark brush.
Understanding the direction of the light is important for making a complex scene such as this into a simple easy-to-paint scene. By knowing the light/dark aspect of the figures, one can paint faster and with more purpose. This also is important when painting plein air and there is a lot going on. Your composition will also be more successful if you group the dark figures.
