Art Process

Watch 2 large oil paintings get created. No sound or narration.

Transparent water, marsh grass, and sky are show with time lapse and real-time brush marks. Materials used are oil and on my supply list... water mixable to start with traditional oil as a second coat and full paint mixed in large piles. I spend a lot of time on a tight value plan and composition worked out in real-time on the canvas (no study) to make the next layers of full paint go well with few revisions. For each painting I used about 50 photos and video. Video has less high contrast so I found this more useful than still photos. There were times I worked from memory. If you see me looking back, I'm checking out the mirror I place behind me in the studio. These paintings were done with wet or semi wet paint in long painting marathon sessions.

Try a larger painting, it's fun! Problems can be averted by knowing value, essential lines (such as horizon line) and mixing large amounts of color. Make use of the idea of a color fade (transition from warm/cool and light/dark) with large art. For example see how I used the 'fade' idea for the water and in the sky. Colors can be a tad more grey with large art, this is less brash and easier to push chromo up later if you need to.
