There is no 'wrong' way to do this exercise - unless you don't do it! Make a move on the paper or canvas... any move. Then continue to define what gets you excited about a scene or a collection of objects. Review also Basics videos (Watercolor, Oil and Landscape) in Fundamentals for more simple studies in 'bands of value' that can be elevated with shape variation and color. Dots and bands are great ways to start radically simple for 'play time' and then refine artistically.
