How to paint sunshine and cast shadows in oil. Mixing grays (plus warm/cool shifts) for realistic shadows.

48min

Design a better painting from the start. Concepts show how to simplify: shape, value, and building angles. No perspective is needed for this lesson. NEW... this demo is filmed in 4K. If the video does not stream smoothly for you, try selecting 1080 (normal) resolution with the gear tool in lower left of video box. Most users will not see a difference in quality, but for those who have hi-def monitors, you will enjoy the 4K.

See attached artwork image for finished painting. I worked on this after the video. I did a partial scrape-out to unify and selectively destroy/merge some harsh edges. I also repainted some of the white trim in the door columns, and added definition to the dark door panels.

Note for water media: This would be very simple to do in watercolor and I plan to show students this lesson for the live demo on March 22. First step is drawing shapes out (pencil or light wash of burnt umber or cobalt), then paint the building as if there was all sunshine (no shadow). Let dry and do the shadow as a second layer of color.

Create a painting using sun and shadow. You can choose a similar photo of your own, or choose to use a photo with more angles and perspective. The principles are the same. Try to not overstate value shifts shown in the photo. Usually sun/shadow value separation is only one or two values. Photos make the shift seem more, also our brain interferes and can push value (brighter/darker). If you feel the urge to reach for more white or more dark, sometimes the solution is to simplify and clean up the details in the mass shapes instead (for example what I did on the road).

If you choose a pastel color building instead of a gray one as shown here, beware the color is not too bright when you do the painting.
