Landscape

Steps to create a sun/shadow mountain scene. Shot on location in Telluride, Colorado (Trout Lake).

35min

An exciting demo shows light and shadow play on the mountains as the 8 x 16" oil is painted. Narration throughout on how to capture color and value and relationships. After the demo I show some other work created on location in Telluride.

Try to create this painting along with the video. Notice when I slow down to accurately mix color or value. Then there are times when I paint fast to capture the scene. Rocks gathered from your yard, or a nearby park can help you see light/shadow if you are having trouble with the larger landscape.

Watercolor notes: plan to save the thin glaciers as white of the paper (masking fluid can be useful for this). The rest of the art can be created with light-to-dark layers of color. I'd do the clouds as wet puddles with soft edges if you can. The mountains can have harder (dry) edges.
