It all goes back to the 'big idea' (instead of focal point!). What are you trying to say? Where is the painting going? Does it have a 'good read'? Or is it... THE CONFUSED VERSION! Digital tools can help by offering another view and 'doodling' on a mid-done painting for a fresh take.

Break away from pre-conceived notions of what is proper in creating art. Art is not a linear progression of start to finish. Sometimes you go back to a sketch... or a strong memory. Always clarify your intent: before painting, and mid-way through. Mindlessly painting without strong intent leads to failed art or art that's just OK. Stretch yourself to demand more of your paintings. It's not easy and there is no one solution.
