FIND AN IDEA & REFINE
Get involved with what to paint. In this video, and for the upcoming Zoom, I pick for you, but to move ahead in creating art do be emotionally involved. This enthusiasm will show in your painting!
SHAPES: All too often basic shape or shilloutete is overlooked for an idea. It seems too basic and boring. I'm guilty of this! Usually my city scenes have a lot going on and it's what gets me excited to paint. Possibly you were surprised about my choice for the demo. I was really moved by the small oil painting shown in the video and thought how fun it would be to put my own spin on this idea. I really respected what the artist had to say visually. Interestingly, a friend who toured the museum also commented on this small gem of a painting later at lunch! Indepentanly, we had both taken a picture of it. The art had power and impact through simplicity. I'm excited to try this project with students!
SKETCH: Use the download tab to try the gray reference for quick sketches. Try horizontal and vertical ideas. Look at some of your own photos, or try working from memory or imagination. What is exciting? Can you see big shapes (i.e., trees merged with a bridge?) My studies were about 5-10 seconds of doodling an idea. Use blob shapes and try to connect masses. Don't judge the results as you are creating, just play with shapes. When you have a few thumbnail sketches, review the collection. Pick a sketch to develop that has potential. My sketch had interesting shapes and avoided a 50-50 ratio of light-dark. This makes for a more interesting design.
